Coastal Critters

Discover the wonders of coastal wildlife with the Living Coast! Campers will meet animals up close during daily encounters and enjoy activities like crafts, nature walks, and games. With every day offering new adventures, this camp is perfect for curious minds and young explorers!

Day 1:

Hear the Wild

Step into the world of animals and discover the fantastic ways they communicate! Campers will embark on a fun-filled adventure to explore how animals talk to each other, from chirps and calls to signals and scents. Through immersive activities like trail walks, hands-on crafts, and engaging science experiments, campers connect with nature and will let their curiosity run wild!

Trek the Trails

Explore the diverse ecosystems of San Diego County with the Living Coast Discovery Center! Throughout the week, campers will walk local trails, discovering native plants and animals while learning about the importance of our local habitats. Through hands-on experiences, animal encounters, and citizen science activities, campers will connect with nature and develop a deeper understanding of the environment.

Day 1:

  • Learn about our coastal sage scrub habitat.
  • Work on an origami craft.
  • Meet an animal.

Day 2:

  • Go on a field trip.
  • Learn about the chaparral ecosystem.
  • Meet a Living Coast animal ambassador. 

Day 3:

  • Learn about coastal ecosystems.
  • Participate in animal feeding.
  • Observe plankton and brine shrimp under a microscope.

Day 4:

  • Go on a field trip. 
  • Meet a reptile.
  • Learn about wetlands and our local watershed.

Day 5:

  • Learn about riparian ecosystems.
  • Go on a beach cleanup.

Super Senses

Taste, smell, see, hear, and feel during this camp all about super senses! In this wild camp, campers will learn about the super senses of animals and what it takes to survive in the wild.

Day 1:

  • Meet a Living Coast animal ambassador.

Natural Navigators

Have you ever wondered why animals migrate? In this camp, students will learn about the incredible journeys animals take, and gain a deeper understanding of our amazing local wildlife. With daily animal encounters, games, and opportunities to explore a wildlife refuge, this camp is perfect for future biologists curious about the wildlife around them.

Day 1:

  • Learn about migration and navigation.
  • Meet an animal.
  • Participate in a navigation-based activity.

Day 2:

  • Focus on sea turtle migration.
  • Participate in animal feeding.
  • Make a craft.

Day 3:

  • Learn about cliff swallows, a migratory bird.
  • Go on a walk around the refuge.
  • Meet a bird ambassador.

Day 4:

  • Learn about whales that migrate through San Diego.
  • Meet an animal ambassador.
  • Make a craft.

Day 5:

  • Meet an animal.
  • Play a game.
  • Learn about Monarch butterfly migration.

Dynamite Defenses

Have you ever wondered how animals stay safe out in the wild? Get ready to explore the incredible defense mechanisms and protective adaptations of the species from Southern California! Campers will enjoy animal encounters, trail walks through the refuge, and dynamic activities that highlight the clever survival strategies that animals use.

Day 1:

  • Learn about active defense in animals.
  • Do an experiment.
  • Meet an animal ambassador.

Day 2:

  • Go on a field trip.
  • Play a game.
  • Learn about camouflage and evasion.

Day 3:

  • Go on a trail walk.
  • Meet an animal ambassador.
  • Do an experiment.

Camp Add-Ons

Camp T-Shirts

Camp T-shirts are only $12!

T-shirts are available online during your registration or onsite for $12. T-shirts can be added to your registration by selecting your camper’s t-shirt size as an add-on option at the bottom of the camp registration page. Camp t-shirts should be purchased online prior to camp, but if you would like to purchase a shirt during the camp week, please bring $12 in cash and let your child’s Camp Coordinator know on the first day of camp.

Gift Shop Credit

Gift Shop Credit

Want your camper to have an extra memento from the Living Coast gift shop? Add gift shop credit to your registration so your little camper can get his or her souvenir on the last day of camp. Gift shop credits can be added to your registration online based on the week of camp. We suggest reserving this for the last camp of the season. You can always send cash for gift shop day too! Note: We do not allow your camper to purchase snacks or drinks during our trip to the gift shop.

FAQ’s

1. Do you offer extended care/times?

Extended care is offered through extended check-in and check-out windows, during which campers may engage in games and activities with staff supervision. Check-in for all camps is 8:30 AM – 9:15 AM. Check-out times are based on your camp registration. Half-day check-out is 12:15 – 1:00 PM, and full-day check-out is 3:45 PM – 4:30 PM.

Evening care is not available at this time.

2. My camper has special needs (medical, behavioral, dietary, etc.). Can you accommodate?

The Living Coast Discovery Center strives to create an inclusive environment for everyone. Please give us a call to discuss your camper’s unique needs with our education team. When registering, please include any critical information to assist our staff with working with your camper. This will ensure we can provide the best experience for you and your camper.

3. What will my child get to see and do at your camp?

The Living Coast Discovery Center strives to bring the excitement of nature exploration, scientific inquiry, and wildlife connection to your students. Campers will meet at least one animal up close, explore the trails, visit various exhibits, feed some of our ambassadors, practice hands-on science, create recycled arts and crafts, and more.

If your camper is staying all day, please pack plenty of water, a lunch, and two extra snacks. Sunscreen, appropriate shoes, and a hat are all important too!

4. What about the shuttle? How do I get in past the gate?

Due to our sensitive wildlife on the Refuge, parents cannot drive directly to the Living Coast. Check-in and check-out occur at our Camp Zone in our parking lot. Please make sure to arrive during the designated check-in and check-out windows. If you will be late/early, call our Education Team (619-409-5908) immediately so we can inform you of the procedure for accessing the site.

Parents should remain in their car during our Camp Zone check-in and check-out process. The Camp Coordinator will check ID’s from the vehicle.

Discounts

Military Discounts Available

Please call 619-409-5908 for the discount code. Military discount is 10% off camp prices, and families may be subject to verification at check-in. Discounts cannot be combined. Discounts do not apply towards t-shirt or gift shop credit sales.

Membership Prices

All current members of the Living Coast automatically receive a reduced price at checkout. Make sure you have set up your online account to receive the discount. Call the membership department at 619-409-5940 if you need assistance setting up your account.

Cancellation Policy & Camp Info

No refunds are given on programs canceled by the registrant less than 7 days prior to the program date.  For cancellations made by the registrant more than 7 days prior to the first date of the program, an 80% refund will be given.  LCDC reserves the right to cancel any program.  In the event that LCDC cancels a program, all program fees will be refunded.
